His research and development activities started in 1985, after 10 years of busy gynecological and obstetrical practice, in collaboration with a group of gynecologists at the University of Ghent, Belgium, guided by Prof. Michel Thiery. The IUD-group later became known as the International Study Group on Intrauterine Drug Delivery. The group studied mainly intrauterine devices.
Dr. Wildemeersch actively started to think about the development of innovative drug delivery technologies, aimed at finding improved methods for the prevention and treatment of gynecological conditions, improvements to birth control methods, and higher levels of safety, user acceptability, compliance and quality of life for women. This is how GyneFix®, FibroPlant® and Femilis® came to existance.
Dr. Wildemeersch continues to explore new avenues of research such as the intrauterine treatment of fibroids (myomas) and endometriosis, a conditions which can result in infertility.
More recently, a new collaboration with the Ghent University was established concerning the development of a method for the prevention of AIDS transmission. This research hopefully will help reduce the soaring number of AIDS patients.
Dr. Wildemeersch remains devoted to his patients in his gynecological practices in Knokke and Ghent where he focusses mainly on contraception and gynecological treatment using the products which he developed himself.
