This website is about three unique intrauterine devices or systems (IUD/IUS) for contraception and for the treatment of frequently occurring gynaecological conditions. These include heavy and irregular menstrual bleeding, painful menstruation and uterine tumours, any of which might hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). 60 to 80% of hysterectomies can be avoided by intrauterine drug delivery.

afbeelding gynefix GyneFix® is a very small copper containing intrauterine device (IUD) with a duration of action of five years that is almost 100% effective in the prevention of pregnancy. It is smaller than any other IUD. The size of an IUD is closely related to the side effects it causes, so that smaller devices are better tolerated with less effect on the amount of blood loss. The small GyneFix® does not increase menstrual blood loss. This is an advantage over conventional IUDs that can induce heavy periods. Heavy menstrual bleeding is the most common cause for the removal of an IUD.
afbeelding gynefix FibroPlant® does not contain copper. It is provides with a high-tech drug delivery system which, by diffusion, releases small amounts of a hormone in the uterine cavity.
afbeelding gynefix Femilis® has a classical T-shaped design. The vertical stem of the T has a similar drug delivery system as the FibroPlant® system.
GyneFix®, FibroPlant® and Femilis® are locally acting devices. By definition, locally acting agents avoid systemic side-effects and effects on other organ systems such as the breasts, the liver or blood. This is important since systemically administered contraceptive hormones often cause side-effects such as migraine, weight gain and loss of libido and can also increase the risk of breast and liver cancer, or deep venous thrombosis.
